Q: How much do you charge for an on-site estimate of my floors?

A: We provide free estimates to all of our customers living in the greater Atlanta area. If you’d like, we can provide you with references from previous customers. Call us at 770-424-3219 or email us at emperialhardwood@gmail.com to set up an estimate.

Q: Deciding on a color for my hardwood floors is a very difficult choice to make. What’s the best way to make my decision?

A: We understand that it’s difficult to visualize the hues and accents of your color choice by flipping through a color-sample book. We believe the best way to decide on a color is to actually see the color on the floor to judge how it fits with your home decor. If you’d like, we will gladly send the company’s owner Ricky to your house to sand down several 3’x1’ areas of your floor and test out different stain colors for you to choose from. We do not charge for this free service.

Q: Is it possible for me to get a ball-park price quote of my job over the phone?

A: We have no problem with providing prices to you over the phone. Don’t hesitate to call us--describe the work that you need done and we will do our best to provide you a price range.

Q: How dusty will my house be after the work is done?

A: We use the Bona-Kemi Dust-Free system that cuts the dust by 90%. To make sure that we leave your house as dust free as possible, we feather-dust your windows and walls. Additionally, we hang protective plastic around the work area to contain the dust within only the rooms we worked in.

Q: Do I need to move out of my house while the work is being done?

A: Most people do find another place to stay while the project is being completed to avoid walking on wet floors and keep away from the unpleasant odor. Some people do however prefer to stay in the basement or even live upstairs if the work does not impede access to the staircase.

Q: How strong is your polyurethane?

A: We offer a 5-year polyurethane finish and 10-year polyurethane finish products.

Q: How safe are the products you use?

A: All of our products are safe and non-toxic to humans and pets, with the exception of birds who are occasionally sensitive to the product’s odor.

Q: How long will the project take?

A: On average, refinishing and installation projects take 3 to 7 days.

Q: Is Emperial Hardwood Floors licensed?

A: Yes, we are licensed and have general liability insurance.

Q: Do you offer a warranty for the work done?

A: We offer a 1-year warranty for most of our services. Please ask us for details.

A: Yes, we replace shoe-molding on all refinishing and installation jobs. You have a choice of primed-white or finished-oak shoe-molding. [In case you were wondering, shoe-molding is the short, oak trim piece attached to the baseboard running along the edges where the wall meets the floor.]

Wood Floors 101

Q: I’m not sure where to begin! My floors are in bad shape, so what can I do about it?

A: To restore the look of your floors you essentially have two choices: “recoat” the wood floor or “refinish” the wood floor. Recoating means that a new coat of polyurethane is applied on top of the existing finish, while refinishing means that the floors are first sanded down to bare wood and new coats of stain and protective polyurethane are applied. Refinishing is like changing your existing wood floors from a fresh start. Give us a call at 770-424-3219 and we will work you through the process.

Q: What determines the color of a hardwood floor?

A: The stain. In order to change the color of your existing hardwood floors, they must first be sanded down to bare wood so that a different colored stain can be applied.

Q: What exactly makes up the different layers of my hardwood floors?

A: On top of the bare wood, there is one coat of stain for color and (optimally) three coats of polyurethane for endurance and protection of the wood.

Q: What is a prefinished floor?

A: “Prefinished” means that the flooring was finished at the factory. The floor may be prefinished-engineered which can only be sanded down once in it’s lifetime or the floor may be prefinished-3/4”-thick oak floor that can be sanded down many times. Additionally, there is a laminate type of prefinished flooring, which is a wood-imitation product--there’s no polyurethane and no maintenance. Essentially, it’s a laminated printing of a wood design.

Q: What is the best way to clean our floors?

A: We recommend only using Bona Kemi's home cleaning system for cleaning your floors. We have seen many other cleaning products ruin our customer's floors.
